Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea is situated a short distance from the northern tip of Queensland. It is located entirely within the tropics and much of the country is covered by tropical rainforests, towering mountain peaks and wild serpentine rivers.
WHERES THE SURF
Kavieng is situated at the northern end of Papua New Guinea also know as New Ireland. New Ireland is an idyllic South Pacific province that lies well off the coast of mainland Papua New Guinea and forms part of the Bismarck Archipelago.
WHEN TO GET THERE
The surf season officially kicks off start of November and winds down end of April each year. This time of year you can enjoy the swell generated from lows pressure systems and storm activity in the North Pacific. Whilst these swells travel a long way to get here, it does give rise to some small to medium size, quality surf on the local reefs. Bookings are essentials as Kavieng fills up fast! There is a limit of 20 visiting surfers at any one time who can join the local surf population.
THE BREAKS
The nature of the surf is typically 2-4 foot over reef at varying levels of difficulty. Most of the reefs will handle larger swells of up to 8 foot, with lefts and rights. Some are challenging and others more forgiving. There is a reasonable selection in relatively close proximity within the Kavieng Surf Management Area. There are waves further afield, also under Management Plans and accessible for a nominal fee which is again disbursed between the Association / Club & resident reef communities.
NUSA ISLAND RETREAT
Nusa is set on an idyllic sandy island point, surrounded by a superb swimming beach and crystal clear blue water. Accommodation in the form of simple, high quality traditional island style bungalows catering for up to five people. The bungalows are shared bathroom facilities and hot water.
