Liveaboard

Polar Pioneer was built in Finland in 1985 as an ice-strengthened research ship, and for many years she plied the treacherous waters of the USSR's northern coast. In 2000 she was refurbished in St Petersburg to provide  comfortable accommodation for 56 passengers.A combined bar/lounge/library area (stocked with a good collection of polar books) was also created by simple internal restructuring.This class of vessel has a fine reputation for polar expedition cruising, due to its strength manoeuvrability and small number of cabins.  All cabins have outside portholes plus ample storage space. The Russian captain and crew are among the most experienced ice-navigators in the world and their enthusiasm is legendary.

The spacious bridge is always open to us and the decks are ideal for viewing. The chefs are European, and the dining room is  attended by Russian stewardesses. Polar Pioneer is not a luxury vessel as such, but this is our most popular ship for travel to the Polar regions. The accommodation is simple yet comfortable, and the meals are wholesome and  uncomplicated. A small fleet of inflatable Zodiacs with outboard motors enable us to travel from ship to shore.

Auroras divers have explored quite a bit of Antarctic underwater territory in recent seasons. They have recorded some extraordinary sites and are keen to revisit in addition to making new discoveries. To participate in the diving you will need to have done at least 20 dives in a dry suit.  Two or three  dive days are aimed for in  Antarctica.

Ice and Weather

The itinerary in Antarctica is always weather and ice dependent.  Ice isn’t static but is always in motion and pack ice movement often forces the change in the sailing schedule.  It is also possible that certain bays or fjords are closed because of ice.  In this case the  itinerary will be altered accordingly. When changing the itinerary, we can assure you that the Captain, Expedition Leader and the Divemaster will provide a program that corresponds with the character of the expedition.The main problem is that there are so many great places to visit it’s hard to know which are the best at the time! These diving voyages are true expeditions. Each dive will be a surprising event and you will be exploring new and never-before-dived places.Each dive site will vary according to conditions and accessibility, but will surely offer a unique and exiting experience.

Divemaster/Dive-Guide

The Divemaster on board the Polar Pioneer is Henrik Lovendahl.  An assistant dive guide may accompany him and a marine biologist  is also on board.

Medical Facilities

The Polar Pioneer has a medical doctor and a clinic equipped to treat most minor illnesses and injuries, and has basic resuscitation facilities. There is no recompression chamber on the ship and should one be required evacuation back to South America may need to be arranged.

Safety First!!

Scuba diving in Antarctica is no more dangerous than normal scuba diving as long as you stick to one basic but very important rule: Safety First. The is no have access to a recompression chamber in  Antarctica therefore they cannot accept risky   ventures from any of our divers and all dives are  limited to a maximum depth of 20 meters/66 feet. Diving under fixed sea-ice is not permitted, unless assessed as safe by the divemaster.  You are asked to remain with the group at all times and to adhere to all normal   Standard Safe Diving Practices.  We cannot emphasise enough the  importance of following the Divemaster's safety rules at all times, and of sticking to the dive plan.

Norfolk Island

Cocos

Cocos Dive is located on Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an external territory of Australia right in the middle of the Indian Ocean. This little known horseshoe-shaped jewel rises from the depths of the Indian Ocean atop of a huge volcanic seamount, unspoilit by commercialism or overrun by tourists. It's actually one of Australia's best kept holiday destination secrets!

The reefs surrounding Cocos offers divers world class, 5-star diving in a unique 5-star underwater environment. Pristine gardens of colourful soft leather corals, steep slopes covered with glorious golden green cabbage shaped hard corals and huge gorgonian fans that cling precariously to the walls as they sway to and fro in the gentle current; Cocos has all this and more! Sharks, turtles, mantas, pelagics, brightly coloured marine fish and dolphins are regularly seen during your diving holiday. For those who enjoy diving on history there is an underwater wreck trail on the southern atoll. Although not fully completed, it is already proving popular with divers and snorkellers.

For the non-diving partner relax or walk along a deserted beach, take a day trip out on the glass-bottom boat; jump aboard Dory's Designer Tours dinghy and visit the smaller islands of the southern atoll; visit Home Island and take in a cultural tour around the Cocos Malay kampong; or simply explore the islands yourself. There is always something to do even if it's just lying on the beach reading.

DIVE COCOS

Diving the Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a year round activity. The water temperature averages between 26°C during the cooler months of July through to October and 29°C during the warmer months of December through to May. Occasionally, a colder thermacline may drop the water temperature down to a "chilly" 25°C!

Visibility on most dive sites averages 20-30 metres. Some sites where the lagoon flushes out into the Indian Ocean may cause the visibility to drop to 15 metres. Most of the dive sites are suitable to any level of experience.

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands have steep drop-offs that allows those divers who are qualified and/or suitably experienced to venture deeper than the less experienced diver. Having the luxury of multi-level diving ensures everyone is able to enjoy the same site and similar experiences with the marine creatures.

Cocos (Keeling) Islands is also a wonderful destination for the photographer. The waters surrounding the atoll teem with spectacular marine life, sharks, turtles, pelagics, unusual hybrids, macro creatures, pristine coral gardens and beautiful mammals.

Cocos Dive has over 25 regularly visited dive sites, each unique in its own special way. Most of these dive sites are approximately 20 minutes away from the small boat launching ramp or the West Island jetty. Whether you are a big fish junky or enjoy pristine corals, macro life or just being underwater, Cocos Dive can certainly cater to your needs.

Great Barrier Reef

ISLAND RESORTS OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

 LADY ELLIOT ISLAND
Situated on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot Island is just 80km north east of Bundaberg and accessible by plane as it is the only coral cay on the reef to have its own airstrip. Flights from Bundaberg take just 25 minutes.

The atmosphere on the island is very relaxed and casual with accommodation in comfortable cabins with their own private facilities, or rough it in style in a tent cabin with shared toilet. There is a general dining area for all meals and 24 hour tea/coffee making facilities are available. Staff are happy to pack a picnic lunch for you to take to a secluded beach on the island, or maybe you prefer a reef walk, or glass bottom boat ride or just swim in the coral pool and feed the fish. If you have never scuba dived before Lady Elliot is a great place to learn with professional instructors who are experienced in local conditions and there is an underwater trail for easy guidance while diving.

HERON ISLAND

Heron Island is without doubt Australia’s premier diving location. After spending the day exploring the warm, clear waters and the amazing reefs surrounding this island you can unwind and enjoy the facilities of an international resort. Resort facilities include restaurant, cocktail bar, tennis court, swimming pools, coffee shop, child -minding facilities and a games room. Heron also offer Open Water Diving Certificate courses, night dives and adventure diving which involves a full day trip to outlying virgin reefs. There are three main grades of accommodation to suit all budgets. The Heron Suites (38 in total) are beachside with a two room configuration with balcony/refrigerator/ceiling fan and tea/coffee making facilities. The Reef Suites are smaller in size with refrigerator, balcony, ceiling fan and tea/coffee making facilities. The Turtle Cabins are bungalow style accommodation with ceiling fan and share toilet facilities. Heron Island is reached by a two hour catamaran trip from Gladstone, or by helicopter a fifteen minute low flying experience.

THE YONGALA

This world famous wreck went down during a cyclone in 1911 taking everyone on board with her. Protected by the Historic Shipwrecks Act, she is now home to amazing arrays of marine life. Prepare to do some whale watching, as Humpback Whales are spotted regularly between the months of July - September

GREAT BARRIER REEF

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest expanse of living coral reef, stretching for more than 2000km from Cape York at the very tip of mainland Australia to Gladstone in the south. The Great Barrier Reef comprises 2900 individual reefs and 71 coral islands which support an incredibly diverse range of sponge, coral, molluscs, echinoderms and fish. The variety of diving options will surprise and delight you. While many of the best reef dives are quite a distance offshore and accessed by charter boat, on some coral cays and islands, you can literally walk off the beach and dive into coral wonderland.

CAIRNS COLONIAL CLUB RESORT

The Cairns Colonial Club Resort is the perfect place to relax and unwind overnight before connecting to the various diving cruises available on the Great Barrier Reef. South Australia

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN SHARK DIVES

South Australia is home to the Great White Shark and operators have been doing cage diving here since the 1970's. The Great White shark is now protected. While Great White sharks can be found in other parts of the world, it is here the sharks are usually bigger and the sightings much more reliable.  Rodney Fox, who was a shark attack survivor  is the best known of the operators. They have led over 100 expeditions to find the Great White shark and he has now teamed up with Mike Ball to offer one of the best shark dives on the planet.

Western Australia

EXMOUTH

Exmouth is one of the newest towns in Australia founded in 1967 as a support town for the US Naval Communications Station and is the nearest access point for the magnificent Ningaloo Marine Park. The Ningaloo Reef is the largest Fringing Coral reef in the world. It is home to over 500 species of fish and 250 soft and hard corals. March is coral spawning time and this triggers the arrival of the world’s largest fish, the whale shark. During winter months humpback whales and their calves migrate to rest and play in these warm waters. During the summer months giant turtles can be seen as they come to shore to lay their eggs and their babies hatch and scuttle back to the ocean. Safe year round swimming and temperate waters make Exmouth a haven for diving enthusiasts. Flights are available to Learmonth, the closest airport to Exmouth from Perth.

POT-SHOT HOTEL RESORT

For the months of March,April and May the majestic whale sharks arrive at Exmouth. Travel to Tantabiddi, a forty five minute transfer from Exmouth and then onward to Ningaloo Reef, the home of the whale shark for this short period.

Rottnest Island is Perth's premier dive area. Situated off the coast of Fremantle, it take a pleasant 30-40 minute boat ride to get into the pristine waters of the island. Here you will find a multitude of dive sites from historic wrecks to beautiful limestone reef formations and swimthroughs. The crystal clear waters are home to a large variety of sealife such as, West-Australian rock lobsters, (crayfish), Dhu-fish, parrot fish as well as many other species of reef inhabitants. Soft corals and sponges decorate the limestone formations which provide spectacular swimthroughs and semi penetration dives

H.M.A.S. SWAN DUNSBOROUGH

The Geographe Bay Artificial Reef Society Inc sunk the HMAS SWAN in 30 meters of water, 1.3 nautical miles off Point Piquet, Dunsborough Western Australia as a dive wreck, artificial reef and tourist attraction. Regarded as the largest ship in the southern hemisphere to be scuttled for dive purposes the HMAS Swan will bring a new dimension to what is already a thriving community.

Located a little over 200km south of Perth at Dunsborough, the Swan shipwreck is an incredible dive. Sunk purposely in 1997 for divers the wreck lies upright in 35 metres of water, she is 113 metres long and over 30 metres wide. The average visibility we receive in this area is 18-25 metres. In the short time the Swan has been down, she has already become home to many different species of fishes, and is a dive not to be missed while you are visiting Western Australia.

Aitutaki Lagoon Resort & Spa

Marsa Alam (Emperor Divers) Liveaboard Dive Sites

The offshore islands in this area have recently been reopened for diving after a long closure by the Egyptian Government and have been designated as a Marine Park. Now suitable moorings are installed for dive boats visiting this area. The Brothers are really the tops of two undersea mountains these islands rise from the depths, the coral clad walls do offer outstanding diving with plenty of big fish action due to there remote location some 80km offshore.

Elphinstone Reef
The sheer walls of this great reef plunge steeply into the blue, richly decorated with soft corals, sponges, gorgonians and fans. Sharks often swim by the spot to feed on the abundant reef fish population. The northern plateau is home to schooling hammerheads with frequent sightings of oceanic white tip sharks.

Daedalus Reef
A huge round reef with a lighthouse more than 40 miles away from the coast, features an excellent opportunity for spotting big pelagics including manta rays. All around its steep walls you will see an extreme variety of fish and coral. Good chance to see schooling hammerheads on the northern point. Strong currents possible.

Abu Galawa Soraya
The northern edge of the 'Fury Shoal' group, this reef has a fantastic hard coral garden, and a wreck of a private sailing boat on the western side which is packed with glassfish.

Shaab Claude
Famous for its large labyrinths of swim throughs. Huge porite corals and a resident napoleon. Often white tip reef sharks and a very nice anemone and clownfish settlement on a small pinnacle a little off the reef to the south.

Zabargad
Enormous mountain coming out of the water surrounded by a lagoon and circling reef. A couple of wrecks and some decent diving with a great variety of both corals and reef fish.

Rocky Island
Tiny rock emerging a few feet out of the water, it offers one of the most incredible underwater scenarios of the whole Red Sea. Steep walls falling into the deep blue, currents, soft corals and a great abundance of pelagics and all kinds of fish.

St Johns Reef
This incredibly beautiful reef lies Approx. 40km North of the Sudanese border and 20km south of Zabargad .  The reef covers a huge area and many dives would be needed to explore the numerous coral heads and islands that make up this extensive area.

Colona Dive Center & Liveaboards

Colona Dive Center is open every day, around the year - so why wait…the dolphins and sharks are calling…   Taking a trip on one of the Liveaboards will open your eyes to the ease of diving, no more lugging heavy equipment along crowded jetties each day or having to fight your way through a wall of bubbles on some Local dive sites.  A typical trip on the Colona will last for one week. This will give you an experience of what the Red Sea can really offer; wrecks, walls, drifts, intense coral reef and peaceful night diving. The itinerary will include all of the famous sites you have already heard about and maybe even dived from a daily boat. Dive sites look different when it's only your group diving them! That's the real beauty of liveaboard relaxed diving without the crowds. Here's a brief description of some of the sites you will come across on your liveaboard adventure.

Shark and Yolanda Reef: At the heart of Ras Mohammed National Park . Incorporates a wall that drops to 800m with and exhilarating drift on to a rich coral plateau that is Yolanda reef, so called because of the cargo ship that hit her in the early 80's. This wreck was carrying a shipment of bathroom fittings and some of her containers spilled on to the plateau before she slipped to a watery resting place, some say at 120M deep!! If you look closely among the toilets! You may see the remains of a car that was on the deck. So truly this dive has it all and is rated as one of the best in the world.

The Reefs of Tiran: If the weather is kind to you all of your dives in Tiran will be drift dives. Drift = Current = Big fish!! Tiran is one of the favourite places to see sharks and home to hammerheads in the summer months. Only last week three hammerheads were seen at the back of Jackson Reef. Tiran is not just one dive it is many, each offering their own unique seascape. You will not be disappointed. 

SS Thistlegorm: A wreck not to be missed if you are visiting the Red Sea , it is world famous. Unfortunately when you are world famous every one wants to see you. So Thistlegorm can be a little crowded at times especially when the daily boats arrive. Therefore the best time to view it is early morning or late afternoon.  

The Gulf of Suez: Some sites that should not be overlooked in the Gulf of Suez are; Shag Rock: A small teardrop shaped reef that is full of life and has some of the most luminescent soft corals you will ever see. It also has a wreck at the northern end called Sara H, well worth looking into. 

Gubal Wall: A Drift on a drop off!! This wall has overhangs that are full of glass fish and some creepy caves to explore. Gubal wreck: If weather conditions are favourable you can visit this unknown wreck which lies diagonally in the water from 5M down to 30M and is host to a Hump Head Wrasse that is the size of a small inflatable boat! 

Abu Nuhas: The shipwreck reef, Four in total can be dived at this eerie place. They are; Giannis D, Carnatic, Christola K and the Olden (half a wreck!) all with individual histories and stories to tell, plus as with all of the wreck dives in the Red Sea they are full of fish life. 

A typical day on Colona Liveaboards will begin with an early rise 07.30 with coffee, tea or juice and biscuits. Ready for the first dive of the day, then up for breakfast which will be waiting on the table for you Yum! Yum! Let breakfast digest for a few hours and take the second dive of the day at around 11.30 after this one a light lunch of cold cut's, pasta and salad. Then a quick siesta or a sunbathe before the third of the day usually made around 15.30-17.30 depending on daylight hours. Then a sumptuous dinner at around 19.00-20.00 with a night dive for those with enough energy to do it at 21.00-22.00 
The cuisine on board is supplied by professionally trained cooks they can offer everything from European, Middle Eastern, Vegetarian, Barbecues and lots more just ask. In the evenings relax on the aft deck sipping a cold beer, staring at the stars and just listening to the quiet!! 

Sinai Divers

GHAZALA FLEET LIVEABOARD

Those who are not satisfied with two dives a day and who enjoy diving along remote reefs in little groups and are even willing to trade in their hotel room for a bed right under the North-African starry firmament, a dive cruise on one Sinai Divers safari boats is just what you are looking for.  There will be no lack of luxury either.  The vessels offer the comfort desired for the most beautiful weeks of the year.  Sinai Divers can also arrange safaris on smaller boats for diving clubs or small groups.

GHAZALA I

Ghazala I, already a legend, was the first luxury live-aboard diving vessel built for Sinai Divers. After a total rebuild in 2004, she cruises the Northern Red Sea operating out of Sharm el Sheikh. World famous dive sites like Ras Mohammed, the Straits of Tiran and the World-War-II wreck Thistlegorm are just some of the dive sites on her itinerary.The guests of Ghazala I quickly will feel at home, enjoying the uncrowded comfort of 25 meters length and 3 deck levels. Ghazala II is the perfect dive vessel with 21 meters length and 5 meters beam, a large dive deck, spacious saloon and almost 15 meters long sun deck. She can accomodate up to 18 divers on day trips and maximum 12 passengers on 1 or 2 weeks dive safaris. The 6 double cabins and the dining-room/saloon are made of natural wood and fully carpeted. 2 showers/wc are located below deck and 2 more on the main deck. Camera table, rinsing tanks, charging facilities (220 Volt) and lockers are available on the dive deck. A large dive platform with 2 ladders allows cormfortable diving activities. The partially shaded sun deck is furnished with benches and tables. Electricity is supplied by two 220/380 Volt 18 KVA ONAN generator for all lighting, charging strobes and dive lights and running the K14 Bauer compressor. Batteries are used for lights during night. Ghazala II operates out of Sharm el Sheikh and cruises the Northern Red Sea . Her itinerary includes the dive sites in the Straits of Tiran, Ras Mohammed, Thistlegorm, Shab Ali and the wrecks of Shab Abu Nuhas. Nadi

NADI: (pronounced 'Nandi') Nadi will be your international port of arrival. The town is well developed with a variety of hotels available from budget to 5 star. Walindi Plantation Resort

Few places can claim to have some of the best reef diving in the world.

Kimbe Bay is endowed with massive reef systems rising from a deep sea floor. The shallow domain between the reef and the surface attracts masses of fish and around the reef walls you will see hammerheads, barracuda, giant trevally and dog tooth tuna. Indonesia Liveaboards

Considered by many well-traveled divers to be the best in the world, Mapia offers great biodiversity.  Lush tropical reefs with a dazzling assortment of macro life coupled with massive schools of large animals.   Sharks, mantas, barracuda, tuna along with clouds of colourful fish.   

 Located close of the equator and  north of West Papua, (formerly Irian Jaya),  Mapia can only be dived from a liveaboard.  The dives are almost all drift dives off beautiful, vertical walls.   The variety of soft corals, gorgonians and crinoids is outstanding.  Some gorgonians stick out 3 to 4 meters.  Hammerhead sharks have been seen.  The west fringing reef has a channel that goes into the atoll, where during tide changes, everything is in the water with you. style="mso-spacerun: yes">  Exhilarating! From March to the middle of July, the Oceanic Explorer will depart from Denpasar, Bali; nbsp; that wonderful center of culture, and explore the islands of Nusa Tenggara.  The trips will be from Sunday through the following Sunday, with Komodo, the habitat of the Komodo dragon, as a highlight.   Not only do we visit style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Komodo National Park, we have the opportunity to explore its reefs that are considered amongst the finest in the world.

Between mid-July to the end of August we venture forth from Makassar to explore the Tukang Besi Islands, (WAKATOBI), with its exquisite reefs that propted the late Jacques Cousteau to declare them the finest diving site in the world.    We explore the many islands and atolls in this region.

                                                                  

INDO SIREN & MANDARIN SIREN

The 24 metre S/Y Mandarin Siren joined the Siren Fleet in June 2010 and now offers luxury liveaboard diving in Raja Ampat, North Sulawesi, Flores, Alor and the Banda Sea, Indonesia. The S/Y Mandarin hosts 6 guests in 4 cabins aboard each trip. The cabins are all en-suite and offer a choice of double or twin beds. The dining area is at the rear of the yacht and provides a comfortable dining experience. SEA SAFARI 8

The KLM Sea Safari VIII is one of Indonesia's largest and most spacious Phinisi liveaboard. One of the very few dive vessels in Indonesia built according to international marine class specifications, the ship spans an impressive 44 meters long and 10 meters wide providing guests with an abundance of space. The Sea Safari VIII is available for charters with a minimum of 16 guests for the Raja Ampat region.

Northern Sulawesi

MANADO

In the crystal waters surrounding Manado almost every imaginable species of tropical fish and coral will dazzle the eye of the beholder. Water temperature rarely drops below 27 degrees and average visibility surpasses 30 metres on most days year round. Playful Spinner Dolphins and magnificent Pilot Whales cruise unhurried through the serene waters. Soaring schools of barracuda are not uncommon and the big beautiful Napoleon Wrasse is a particular favourite amongst divers. 

Manado lies on the northern tip of Indonesia in the Sulawesi group of islands towards the Philippines. World renowned diving at Bunaken Marine Reserve awaits all divers. A 185,000 acre underwater marine reserve has been set up around the islands of Bunaken, Tua, Montehage and Nain. The tiny group of islands has some of Indonesia's finest coral reefs, marine life and is frequently visited by underwater photographers from all over the globe.                                                   

NUSANTARA DIVE CENTRE MANADO

West Papua

KRI ECO RESORT

Sitting on the edge of mountainous Kri Island the dive resort is shaded by palm trees that run along a long fine white sand beach.  This established resort consists of traditional buildings over the water, along a jetty and offers traditional Papuan accommodation with excellent food and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. A jetty built over the large shallow lagoon in front of the eco-resort also leads to five of the guest houses. As a bonus, since accommodations are over the water, often you can see sharks, rays and schools of fish in the "garden".

PAPUA PARADISE

Papua Paradise Resort is located on the north-west side of the island. It has ten bungalows built using natural materials and traditional construction methods that extend out over the coral reef. Layang Layang

Layang Layang is a coral atoll in the middle of the South China Sea. A sheer drop of 2000 metres around the rim of the atoll provides exhilarating wall diving. Soft and hard coral of all types and sizes with excellent visibility of 50-60 metres afford a majestic view of this gigantic hanging garden. Famous residents and regular visitors include Napolean wrasse, Manta rays, Hawk bill turtles, Dog Tooth Tuna, White Tip Reef Sharks and the awesome schools of Hammerhead sharks. The resort is open from March - November and closed for the months between January and February.

Sipadan

SIPADAN / MABUL

Rated among the top five diving sites in the world, Sipadan’s reefs are exquisite and the abundant marine life is vibrant. This oceanic island has been called the turtle capital of the world. Nearly every night, turtles make their way up the beach to lay their eggs. The diving program provides you with three boat dives per day and unlimited shore dives. Most of the diving is a combination of wall and drift diving. There is no longer any accommodation on Sipadan itself, with Mabul the home of the array of resorts available.

In 1996 the people of Bikini opened their atoll to the outside world as a dive, sport fishing and tourism destination, and has since drawn praise from many around the globe. When you visit Bikini, it has been said that you don't just dive, fish or sunbathe, you get a history lesson for the ages.

Bikini Atoll opened to divers in June of 1996 to provide an economic base for a possible future resettlement of Bikini Atoll. The Bikini Atoll Council, under the name of Bikini Atoll Divers, fulfilled their goal to open the one of the most professional--and safest--dive operations possible.

BIKINI ATOLL DIVERS

Bikini Atoll is one of the worlds most exclusive dive resorts. Opened to scuba divers in 1996, Bikini is a destination that has to be seen to be believed! Offering 7 night trips only, the air conditioned beachfront rooms will allow you to relax with the greatest of ease after your dives. As far as safe, professional dive operators are concerned, Bikini Atoll Divers ranks up there with the best of them. With divers having the opportunity to be amongst ships decimated by nuclear testing in 1946, this is truly one of the worlds most unique diving experiences.

MV WINDWARD

Bikini can now be accessed from MV Windward, a liveaboard that has been negotiating hard with the Bikini Government to secure access to what are, without a doubt, the finest shipwrecks in the world. Carrying just 10 passengers, Windward will start her cruise in Kwajalein, visiting some of the rarely dived wrecks of the world’s largest atoll, including the Prinz Eugen, and will then sail to Bikini to dive such legendary ships as the Saratoga, Nagato, Arkansas, Lamson and Apogon.

USS Saratoga CV-3

Commissioned in 1927, this American aircraft carrier rests in Bikini's lagoon at a depth of 58 metres (190 feet). Her bridge is easily accessible at 12 metres, her deck at 28 metres, and the hanger for the Helldivers at 38 metres. These Helldivers and bombs are still on display complete with all dials and controls.

Eight hours after the waves created by the atomic Baker blast rolled over her, New York Times correspondent Hanson W. Baldwin wrote this epitaph as he watched the Saratoga sink slowly beneath Bikini's lagoon: "There were many who had served her in the observing fleet and they fought with her through the long hot hours as the sun mounted. Outside the reef...the observing ships cruised, while the Sara slowly died. There were scores who wanted to save her-and perhaps she might have been saved, had there been a crew aboard. But she died a lonely death, with no man upon the decks once teaming with life, with pumps idle and boilers dead. From three o'clock on she sank fast, her buoyancy gone, as the fleet kept the death watch for a 'fighting lady.' The Sara settled-the air soughing from her compartments like the breath from exhausted lungs. At 3:45 p.m. the starboard aft corner of her flight deck was awash; then the loud speakers blared: 'The water is up to her island now; the bow is high in the air.' She died like a queen-proudly. The bow slowly reared high; the stern sank deep, and, as if striving for immortality, the Sara lifted her white numeral 3 high into the sun before her bow slipped slowly under. Her last minutes were slow and tortured; she fought and would not sink, but slowly the 3 was engulfed by the reaching waters, the tip of her mast was the last bit of Sara seen by man." Unless, of course, you are a diver fortunate enough to be visiting Bikini Atoll! The USS Saratoga is the largest diveable vessel in the world, and one of the only aircraft carriers available fordiving.

Kwajalein

Kwajalein is not easily accessible to most divers but the Oleanda have received permission for them to travel the waters of Kwajalein Atoll from January through April 2006.

Kwajalein is a wreck divers dream. Scattered throughout the lagoon, the wrecks vary in depth from very shallow to over 52 metres and are loaded with various types of cargo including airplanes, ammunition, cars and assorted cargo.

Kwajalein Atoll is the largest atoll in the world circling a lagoon of nearly 850 square miles. At one time Kwajalein was the most important base in the Marshalls for support of the Japanese war effort.The underwater world of Kwajalein is a well kept secret. Kwajalein Island is leased to the U.S. Army and is closed to the general public. Given the war history of the area, it is a very desirable destination for divers who love the wrecks or enjoy the lure of lush tropical reefs

INDIES TRADER

Indies Trader is making a 100% commitment to watersports tourism in the Marshall Islands. They have the Bikini Diving Concession and run live aboard dive trips to Kwajalein and Bikini from May to October and Surf trips from November to April. Theyhave two super seaworthy and well maintained liveaboard chaterboats positioned in Majuro. The world famous Indies Trader  and the newest addition the Windward. The Republic of the Marshall Islands consists of 29 atolls and 5 islands within 700,000 square miles of ocean.  Although the Marshall Islands covers such a vast area, the total land area is a mere 70 square miles.

Rongelap

Rongelap Atoll is at the northern end of the Marshall Islands, 420 nautical miles from Majuro. Rongelap has been uninhabited for over 20 years and has recently been designated as a marine preserve. Be among the first to experience this phenomenal destination.

This is the atoll for big fish action. You'll be blown away by the abundant marine life; curious sharks, turtles, intriguing exotic creatures surrounded by crystal clear water. Chuuk (Truk)

TRUK LAGOON
February 1944. US Forces launch Operation Hailstorm on Chuuk (Truk) Lagoon, Japan’s most important Pacific base during World War II. The Japanese are caught completely unaware, and as a result lose over 275 aircraft and 45 ships. These are to form the basis for what is now known as the worlds greatest wreck diving destination.

Truk Lagoon is home to an underwater bounty of bombs, torpedoes, guns, tanks, planes and mines, resting in silence amongst brilliant soft corals. Depths range from 1m to over 60m, and with very little current in 27-30 degree water, Truk Lagoon is a comfortable wreck diving destination for divers of all experience levels.

TRUK STOP HOTEL

The Palau Aggressor II is one of the most amazing dive boats in the world!  A 106ft jet-powered catamarana with a speed in excess of 20kts, she has a mere 4ft draught that allows her to manoevre in shallow water with ease.  On her main dec she sleeps just 16 passengers in 8 air-conditioned deluxe staterooms each with private en suite bathrooms and panoramic windows out to the stunning scenery of Palau.  Diving is not done in the conventional way! Noumea

Noumea will be your international port of arrival. The Amedee Diving Club is located at the Amedee Lighthouse which is on an islet in the lagoon 20 km south of Noumea. Amedee organise two dives per day which include exploring one of the largest coral reefs in the world. You will play with turtles from the lagoon, feed groupers, admire eels or you may explore the wreck of the Dieppoise, a French navy vessel sunk in 1988 which has become a haven for many marine species. Cross the Boulari channel, where grey sharks can be seen or Mantarays at certain times of the year, and discover the outer reef that sinks sharply into the depth of the Pacific.

LE MERIDIEN RESORT (4 star property)

Located in the heart of Noumea, overlooking the spectacular Anse Vata Cove, 10 minutes from downtown shopping and 15 minutes from the Tina 18 –hole international golf course. The hotel has 253 spacious air-conditioned rooms with safe, tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar, fridge, TV, radio, and direct dial phones. The Isle of Pines

The Isle of Pines is recognised as the best diving location for beginners and experienced divers alike. The Isle of Pines is 17km long by 14km wide and is reached in about an hour flying on an Air Caledonie domestic flight from Noumea's domestic airport. Long white sandy beaches bordered by elegant pines, secret caves and caverns in the middle of exotic virgin forest give this island and its friendly Melanesian people an unforgettable charm.

Diving is particularly interesting because of its diversity. There are numerous diving locations along the reef offering a constantly changing panorama of the intimately linked fauna and flora whilst diving on drop-offs, within corridors, passages and sea grottos. For more experienced divers, after a short walk through virgin forest they can venture down to the mysterious fresh water underground caves known as ‘Satan’s Cavern, reachable only by a narrow underwater corridor.

Your hosts from Kunie Scuba Centre, Tony, Brigitte and Phillip will be available every day to assist you in choosing your daily dive sites.

Non-divers are also welcome on the dive boat. There are also a multitude of land activities available such as horse riding, visiting historical convict ruins, caves, local church, canoe & art/craft buildings, local feasts, tennis, bushwalking, seafood picnics, snorkeling, fishing and windsurfing.

Accommodation on the island is in traditional rural bungalows called "Gites". These are comfortably furnished and equipped with kitchenette and fridge. Extra beds can be added on request.

GITE KODJEUE (3 star property)

Situated on the waterfront in the Bay of Ouameo, this Gite offers fifteen bungalows and a block of six room units; there is a restaurant, boutique, car and bicycle hire, tennis court, swimming pool and diving centre.

GITE DE NATAIWATCH (3 star property)

Fifty metres from the Bay of Kanumera, there are four native bungalows equipped with kitchenette and fridge and four modern, self-contained bungalows. There is a licensed restaurant, boutique and bicycle and car hire is available.

Poor Knights

These Islands are a 4 million year old rhyolite volcano, believed to be remains of large lava domes which rose on a deep fracture running from the Coromandel Peninsula to the east coast of Northland. The Poor Knights group which rises 240 metres from the sea comprises of two main islands, the northern named Tawhiti Rahi having an area of 318 acres and the southern island named Aorangi consisting of 163 acres and several small islets and isolated rocks.   A narrow passage divides the two principal islands, which lie in a north south direction.  Most of the islands are surrounded by sheer cliffs some plunging to a depth of 90 metres.  An unusual feature of the islands is the number of caves and archways some which are navigable by boats and some which are underwater. These formations are the result constant wearing away of the weaker volcanic rock. The only beaches on the Poor Knights are found at about 30 metres underwater, these being flooded when the sea rose during the melting of the last ice age.

The Poor Knights Dive Centre is at the hub of Tutukaka, New Zealand's Dive Capital, and home of Dive! Tutukaka. Full equipment hire and tank fills are available. Also available are souvenirs and clothing, films, batteries, canoe and land yacht hire. A visit to the Centre with its unique underwater environment is a destination in itself. Their Poor Knights resource room with natural history displays and continuous audiovisual presentations is free to the public.

Diving in Niue

Niue Dive runs half day dive trips departing from the Dive shop Monday to Saturday at 8.00am and returning at lunchtime.

We do 2 dives at separate locations with an hour's surface interval in between. Single Dive trips and Night Dives can also be arranged. We also run snorkelling, dolphin and whale watching trips.  We encourage our guests to swim with the spinner dolphins and humpback whales when the opportunity arises. Whale season runs from July to October.

The diving on Niue is very easy with virtually no currents, but its also very rewarding.   Our sites are a mix of caverns and pristine hard coral reefs with a wide selection of tropical reef fish and marine life.  Niue's own friendly sea snakes are a  feature on the dives, along with barracuda, turtles, reef sharks and painted crays. We take a conservational approach to  our marine activities - nothing is taken on SCUBA, we don't feed fish and we use moorings on our 10 regular dive sites.

Matavai Resort

This magnificent Resort located on a clifftop, with a breathtaking 180 degree view of the blue Pacific is only 10 minutes from all major facilities and services on Niue.

Vekula Holiday Home

The Vekula Holiday Home is close to the beach at Avatele village in the south-west of Niue. The Avatele sea track leading to the canoe landing, beach and reef pools are just at the bottom of the garden. You're a few steps from sheltered swimming and the reef. Over the road is the village green and church. Come home after a day out exploring Niue and relax. Settle down with a cool drink. A breeze can come either from the sea or land. Wander down through the garden track for a swim. On the weekend, the nearby Washaway Café, the local gathering place from late morning until whenever in the evening, is nearby for casual meals and a chance to socialize. Aliluki South House

The Aliluki South Village Holiday Home is close to Alofi Village, the main town. There is a bush backdrop to the house and over the road are expansive sky views to the west. Spectacular sunsets are a bonus. Aliluki South is a fully furnished house that comfortably sleeps up to six. Damiana Units

These compact adjoining units face onto the village green at Avatele Village in the SW of Niue. A few minutes’ walk to be beach for swimming, great snorkeling and one of the Island's dive departure points. Relax in the private garden, walk across the the Washaway Cafe on Sunday for lunch and on into the evening, or a leisurely walk to Israel Mart for ice creams. Each unit will sleep up to 4. There is a separate double room and 2 single beds in the spacious living area. Marketed only to one party at a time, so will accommodate from 2 to 8.

Fred's Fale

A very compact little fale that has a small kitchen, separate shower/toilet and an open plan living area with a double bed. Fred's Fale faces the Avatele Village green, and it would be 2 minutes to walk to the Avatele Beach for swimming, snorkelling. It is also a dive departure point. Ideal for the solo traveller or a couple.

Sifa's House

Located in Fonuakula and set in a quiet clearing, Sifa's House is to the south of Alofi, the main town of Niue, and less than 1k from the airport. Sifa's House has 4 bedrooms, 1 double and 3 king singles so ideal for a group of friends travelling together. A spacious verandah gives outdoor space. Well located for easy drives to the swimming, snorkel and dive spots on the western coast, and the walks and scenic sites on the eastern coast.

Evo's House

In Alofi South, about 1k from the main township of Alofi, Evo's House has 2 bedrooms, a double and a twin room, plus a bed in the living area. Great for family stays or a small group. Well located to visit all the highlights of Niue, and not far to the evening eateries. Set in a small subdivision, Evo's House is in a garden setting with a spacious verandah on the eastern side.

MALAGAN BEACH RESORT:

Just minutes from the town centre, this resort was built overlooking Kavieng's beautiful harbour and constructed with local timbers in a traditional style. There are 16 deluxe air-conditioned suites with private bathrooms, refrigerators, International Direct Dial telephones, Satellite TV and private verandahs. Covered walkways lead away from the main building and observation deck to guest bungalows which are all beautifully appointed. Port Moresby is your gateway to Papua New Guinea. It is mainly used as a transit stop if your flight schedules require it. Rabaul

Rabaul is on Simpson Harbour and is known for its excellent swimming and snorkelling. Trails in the hillsides around Rabaul, perfect for day hikes to a network of tunnels and caverns built by the Japanese during World War II. In the volcano ringed town of Rabaul, a visit to the volcano observatory is a fascinating attraction. Treks through the dense rainforest heads to undeveloped West New Britain. Rabaul is a laid back place which still has the old Pacific charm about it. People stop in the street to chat, and nobody is in a hurry.

RAPOPO PLANTATION RESORT

Nestled in an idyllic setting amongst a working plantation, Rapopo Plantation Resort is only 10 minutes from the airport. The house reef provides great snorkelling or an excellent late afternoon or evening dive. The beach house has 3 twin share and 2 single rooms with shared bathroom facilities including hot water. Kabaira Dive provides transfers from Tokua Airport, Kokopo and Rabaul Town.

Tufi

Tufi is directly east of Port Moresby and is situated on the northern side of the island about one hour's flying time. It is only accessible by air and sea and is in a rugged, remote terrain. The area maintains its traditional culture and produces unique pottery and Tapa cloth. Most of the dive sites are within 30 minutes by boat, where massive schools of reef fish, pelagics, sharks, hammerheads, grouper and a vast array of corals are present. Visibility is often 30 meters plus (100 Ft) and the water is a comfortable 25 degrees Celsius (77F) year round. Many of the reefs are unexplored and it will be some time before the full diversity of this location is known.

TUFI DIVE RESORT:

The Tufi Dive Resort was originally a plantation house whick then subsequently became the Laki Hotel. In 1993, with extensive renovation, it became the Tufi Dive Resort. The main building houses the dining room, lounge and bar and is a great place to relax. All accommodation units are fan cooled, with private bathrooms, and mosquito nets. The hotel has a swimming pool and a BBQ area with a breathtaking view of the mountainous fjords. All accommodation packages include all meals. The menu features local seafood and fresh local produce. The resort has two dive boats, a 24 ft high speed Sharkcat and a 23 ft Stinger. Hire gear and dive courses are available from the resort.

Walindi

Few places can claim to have some of the best reef diving in the world.

Kimbe Bay is endowed with massive reef systems rising from a deep sea floor. The shallow domain between the reef and the surface attracts masses of fish and around the reef walls you will see hammerheads, barracuda, giant trevally and dog tooth tuna. There is plenty of undiscovered areas so there is always a sense of adventure when diving at Walindi. The warm water and outstanding visibility combine to make Walindi a truly remarkable dive destination and should feature on any divers wish list.

WALINDI PLANTATION RESORT

Accommodation is in spacious self contained Beachfront Bungalows with private bathrooms or Plantation Lodge rooms with share bathrooms. The resort was developed out of the interest of visiting scuba divers who recognized the incredible quality of diving. Febrina is 72 foot long and fitted with every convenience to make your dive trip an enjoyable and memorable experience. There are 6 cabins each accommodating two passengers and 3 guest bathrooms. Bohol

BOHOL
Southeast of Cebu, a one hour, forty-five minute flight from Manila lies the island of Bohol. There are direct flights daily from Manila to Tagbilaran City, the access point to Bohol. As you drive through the city you can see the remains of the Spanish rule with a visit to the Baclayon Church a must.

Bohol Beach Club (3 star property)
This is a forty-nine room resort located off Pangaloo Island. All rooms are air-conditioned with ocean views. There is a swimming pool to relax in and activities include: glass-bottom boat, tennis, billiard and table tennis.

Over a dozen dive sites are easily accessible from the in-house dive operation professionally run by the Bohol Beach Club. Concentrating on three dive locations including: Cabilao Island, Panglao Island and Balicasag Island.

Beautiful drop-offs await you, with spectacular coral growths. Gentle drift dives carry you along the walls with the chance of sightings of Hammerheads at certain times of year.

BALICASAG ISLAND RESORT

Coron Palawan

CORON PALAWAN

Coron is has fast become prominent for its excellent wreck diving. Close to the end of World War II, the American Navy discovered a camouflaged fleet of Japanese war ships around Busuanga Island. Taskforce 45 attacked the fleet and sunk 24 ships. Twelve wrecks have been located at diveable limits,  (between five and forty-two metres).

As well as excellent wreck diving, there are several exquisite coral dives and drop offs. Unique sites include Barracuda Lake at Coron Island and Gunther's Cathedral. There are many wrecks located only a short boat ride from the island of Coron. The Akitsushima, Kogyo Maru, Irako, and the gun boat Lusong are just a few. The Barracuda lake is a dive not to be missed. It requires a little effort to make the climb, gear laden, to the site but it is well worth it. Water temperatures vary dramatically,(28-36 celsius), unusual scenery  and of course the encounter with the resident barracuda make this dive one to remember.

Most of the Coral diving takes place around Coron Island or the nearby reefs between Coron & Culion. Dive sites like, the Pinochle, Maming corner, the Rocky corner and the Coral garden. These are beautiful dives along the wall's of Coron Island. The wall's are filled with a big variety of hard and soft corals, big Fan's. Perfect dive sites for under water photography with wide angle & macro. Different kind of Nudibranchs, Lionfish, Crocodile fish, Clown fish &, even some times Turtles, Sharks and ray's!!

Sangat Island Resort

Today, 14 Wrecks are located in dive able depths (between 5 and 40 meters). Most of the sunken vessels were between 100 - 200 meters of length. There are beautiful dives along the walls of Coron Island. There are also coral and drop off dives, lake dives, as well as a great cave dive at “Gunter’s Catherdral”. The wall’s are fi lled with a big variety of hard and soft corals, big Fan’s. Perfect dive sites for under water photography with wide angle & macro. Different kinds of Nudibrunches, Lionfi sh, Korckodile fi sh, Clownfi shes, and even some times Turtles, Sharks and ray’s.

Dumaguete

Best known for exceptional scuba diving and the friendliness of its people, the Philippine archipelago is comprised of 7,107 tropical islands situated in South East Asia between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. Although the country's terrain is an interesting mix of natural resources, it is the magnificent sanctuary beneath the sparkling waters that provide a plethora of wonders, earning a reputation as one of the world's best diving destinations. Coral fringed islands carry some of the world's most diverse eco systems, offering a truly memorable underwater experience to snorkelers and divers alike.

PURA VIDA

This spacious beach resort is located in Dauin, 15 kms south of Dumaguete City on Negros Island and was opened end of 2004. The facility is built from divers for divers and is under Swiss Management. The Beach-Restaurant above the dive center has lovely views of the beach, sea and the resort, and offers Asian as well as international delicacies. After diving you can enjoy a “decompression” beer or a tropical drink at the Pool Bar. There are 12 deluxe rooms, 3 family rooms and 2 suites and all have a nice terrace offering sea and/or pool views. In addition 1 spacious deluxe room is located in the garden area. The rooms are fitted with air condition, cable TV, ceiling fan,   mini bar and a fully-tiled bathroom with hot and cold shower. There are also 10 standard bungalows which are situated inside a nice coconut grove and these are all made out of high-class bamboo. They offer a spacious room with ceiling fan, a fully-tiled bathroom with hot and cold shower and a nice terrace on which to relax. 

SEA EXPLORERS

The SEA EXPLORERS PADI Career Development Center (CDC) is located inside the Pura Vida Beach and Dive Resort and is the main Dive Center. They offer a very well equipped facility directly on the beach with their own office, small retail shop, air-conditioned classroom and three storerooms for guest's equipment. Four times a year Chris Heim organises Instructor Development Courses in the resort. Diving is possible all year round with the water temperature between 26-29 Degrees C. Most of the dive sites are close by with a maximum of a 30-40 minute boat ride. Four to five dives per day can be offered with a maximum depth of 490 metres. Dive boats of offer are as follows:

Malapascua

Malapascua Island lies in the middle of the Philippines in the Visayan Sea across a shllow strait from the northern most tip of Cebu Island. It is a tiny island only about 2.5 kilometres long and one kilometre wide. This little paradise has everything the sun-worshipper or adventurer seeks. Take a dive in the crystal clear ocean with the thresher sharks, go snorkelling among the fishes at the many beautiful coral reefs surrounding the island or just relax in the white sand and let the wind in the palm trees lull you to sleep.

LOGON RESORT

Logon Beach Resort has been on Malapascua for many years but has recently been taken over and refurbished by new management. It is about a 2 minute walk from the dive shop. It is in a picture perfect location on its on private beach. The cottages are basic Filipino style nippa huts with a double bed, the possibility to adda an extra bed, ceiling fan, private bathroom with cold water showers and a nice terrace from where you can enjoy the incredible sea view and witness the most beautiful sunsets. There is also a family cottage available with two double beds that can accommodate four people.    

TEPANEE RESORT

Tepanee is a small resort comprising 6 independent cottages each with double bed and one cottage of 4 rooms with a double bed and a single bed in each. All the cottages have been built with local materials like bamboo and stone and have straw roofs and are perched on a small hill that rises up from the beach. Moalboal

Moalboal is a small village about 100 kilometres from Cebu. Approximately 3 km from Moalboal is Panagsama Beach. Although the beach itself has very little sand it is a special place with a relaxed atmosphere. At low tide you can walk around and explore the reef which after 50m from the shore starts to drop off to 3-35m in depth. At high tide you can swim here and it is also very good for snorkelling. Native fishermen, tourists, and expats from several countries create a unique community. The diving highlight in the area is Percador island which has shallow reefs and a drop off of more than 40m along with caves and an abundance of marine life. There are a lot of dive sites reachable by boat ( 25 minutes maximum) and if you are luck you may encounter whale sharks.

MARCOSAS RESORT

Marcosas Resort offers several types of well furnished cottages, all with air-conditioning and hot showers. All cottages have their own terrace and they are located in a tranquil garden setting with the downtown area just a short stroll away. Honiara

 Honiara is the international gateway and capital of the Solomon Islands. In Wourld War II, Honiara was a major battle area and many ships sunk and planes were shot down during this period. The region is known to the locals as "Iron Bottom Sound". The waters surround Honiara are now host to over 60 WWII wrecks, many of which can be dived.

KING SOLOMON HOTEL
Located in the town of Honiara, this property offers views of Iron Bottom Sound. Guests are transported to their rooms by a ground surface cable car past landscaped gardens, swimming pool and waterfall. Bilikiki is the premier live-aboard dive operator in the Solomon Islands operating out of Honiara to the Russell Islands. Munda

Just one hours flight from Honiara, Munda is located on the Island of New Georgia at the junction of the Roviana and Vona Vona lagoons. It is definitely off the beaten track and a great place to head for those in search of adventure. Culturally, Munda was the centre for the headhunting Roviana people and many homestead features are still visible today. Munda also has a number of WWII relics. A tour through the virgin rainforest will take you to waterfalls, past beautiful and exotic bird and plant life. You can paddle traditional canoes and snorkel over the fringing reef. For the diver there are majestic walls and virgin reef with remarkable soft coral overhangs. At 'shark point' there is a 4km drop-off with spectacular fish life. There are numerous dive sites including wrecks, reefs and caves - all with great visibility. A three day excursion is available with the chance to stay in native villages and visit remot dive locations.

AGNES LODGE
Agnes Lodge was a former colonial rest house and was purchased in 1977 by Agnes Kera and her family. Since then the facilities of this basic 3- roomed structure have expanded into a quaint 20-room hotel. The lodge has stunning views over Roviana Lagoon and offers a variety of accommodation from backpacker to larger 3 star rooms . Seafood is the specialty of the hotel’s restaurant and the hotel’s bar is a great meeting spot for tourists and locals. Diving is organised through Adventure Sports Munda.

ZIPOLO HABU RESORT
Located in Vona Vona Lagoon Munda in the western province of the Solomon Islands. Situated on a perfect blue lagoon fringed by white sands and tall green palms. The resort is designed for the traveller or fisherman who is keen to enjoy the experience of life in a true island style bungalow. The resort offers some great diving as well as sportsfi shing on the lagoon or beyond the reef. They can also arange surfing, fishing or boating adventures to many outstanding sites all close by. The typical dive site is a coral wall extending down hundreds of metres - quite a novelty to not be able to see the bottom. There are also coral pinnacles and bommies, a cave dive and a number of WW2 wrecks. Many reef sharks, barracudas, mackerel, turtles, and lots of coral and the usual array of coral reef fish.

MUNDA DIVE
Dive Munda is a small operation with two experienced instructors and great local staff. They offer incredible diving paired with extremely personalized service. Whether you have never dived before, or you have already logged thousands of dives, Munda Dive plan the diving around you. As a PADI Dive Centre, they offer courses from entry level to professional, as well as a great choice of specialty courses. Naturally they have a full line of well-maintained rental equipment and the custom dive boats are equipped with oxygen and other first aid. The diving in Munda is phenomenal. Spectacular walls, dropping off to over 600 meters teem with real big fish action. Grey Reef, Black tip, and White tip sharks routinely patrol the reefs. Eagle rays, shoaling barracudas and other pelagic are also commonplace. Occasional encounters with Silkys, Oceanic White Tips, Silvertips and Hammerheads add to the excitement.

Tulagi

Tulagi is reached by boat, which departs Honiara and takes approximately 50 minutes crossing the famous "Iron Bottom Sound" to reach Tulagi wharf. Looking for a good mis of incredible wrecks and stunning reefs? Here you'll find seaplanes, a mine sweeper, oil tanker and the spectacular American destroyer " The Aaron Ward". The unspoilt reefs feature soft corals, drop offs, huge fans, giant sponges and are all packed with an abundance of tropical marine life.

VANITA MOTEL
Vanita Motel is clean and comfortable, offering both dormitory and ensuite rooms. Restaurant and bar facilities adjoin the lodge or you can make use of the BBQ facilities. The Lodge is situated across the road from the Tulagi wharf and offers single or twin share accommodation. All rooms have power and ceiling fans, 2 rooms have private facilities, the rest dormitory style accommodation with shared facilities (no hot water).

TULAGI DIVE
Tulagi Dive has a well equipped dive shop, with highly trained professional staff that will ensure that your every need is met. In the beautiful waters around Tulagi some of the worlds best diving can be found, from pristine reefs to spectacular WWII wrecks. The “Twin Tunnels”, only 10 minutes away, is one of the best reef dives to be found anywhere on the globe. A coral platform rising from 70 meters to 12 meters at is top and approximately 120 meters in diameter, two natural tubes plunge down from the reef top to meet in a common cavern that then exits onto the reef wall. Leaving the cavern to the reef wall, you are met by a myriad of baitfi sh, which attract the large pelagic feeders - kingfi sh, tuna and shark. After watching this amazing spectacle, you return to the top of the reef, where a kaleidoscope of coral and reef fish, huge anemones, and more colour than you can imagine awaits.

Uepi

Uepi Island is a barrier reef island, covered in rainforest, defined by fringing reef and sandy beach; flanked by the warm waters of the lagoon on one side, and the oceanic depths (2000m) of "The Slot", a deep marine abyss, on the other. Travellers fly to the airport of Seghe where they are met and transferred by motorized boat some 12 kilometres across Marovo Lagoon to Uepi Island Resort - an exciting beginning to a truly unique experience. The island comprises about 250 acres of raised coral reef covered with lowland rainforest and is situated centrally on the Barrier Reef surrounding Marovo Lagoon. The marine ecosystem is extraordinarily diverse and the terrestrial ecosystem is unique. The environment is very much in an undisturbed state. The island is 10km from the nearest village and 150km from the nearest port of supply. Diving is extremely varied and includes coral gardens with magnificent drop-offs, ledges and gutters, featuring sharks, all manner of game fish, and an enormous diversity of reef fish. Turtles, mantas and eagle rays are fairly common sights together with the friendly Uepi hammerheads (in season). Uepi can arrange fantastic wreck diving but as these World War wrecks involve a long boat trip, as extra fuel levy is applied.

UEPI ISLAND RESORT
Uepi accommodation is bungalow style, four are absolute beach-frontage. All accommodations have private facilities and are walking distance from the beach and the fringing reef areas. Activities include diving, sea kayaking, fi shing, snorkelling and swimming from pure white sandy beach or touring to local villages (arranged on request). All meals are included in the tariff and are based around fresh local seafood and fruits and vegetables, prepared by talented local chefs. Uepi diving offers the unique opportunity of diving at sites which are only minutes away from the dive shop. Most of the dive sites are conveniently located either right off the edge of the island or just a short boat trip away. Rarely will you view such high concentrations of fi sh, sponges and corals in such a diverse environment, ranging from lagoon coral gardens to vertical drop-offs into 2000 metres of ocean, most within the confines of a three kilometre reef.

Batticaloa

Batticaloa is in the eastern coast of Sri Lanka  - 314 Km from Colombo.  The    population of 515,707 consists mainly of Tamils, Moors, Sinhalese, Euro-Asian Burghers( specifically Portuguese Burghers and Dutch Burghers) and the indigenous Vedar population.

The Scenic beauty of the Batticaloa is the Lagoons there are three in total: Batticaloa Lagoon,  Valaichchenai Lagoon, and Vakari (Panichchankerni) Lagoon.

Among these lagoon, Batticaloa Lagoon is the largest land covers a 56km long 162 square km area, extending from Pankudaweli in the North and Kalmunai in South.

Batticaloa beaches are sandy and located along a 4 km shoreline in the city and extend through neighboring areas. Kallady beach, is the most popular and serene beachfront location here large numbers of people gather  in the city.

Accommodation:

The Riviera Resort in Batticaloa is 1.5 km from town and located on the lagoon.  This resort is classified as budget accommodation and although basic is clean and tidy and meals are available.

Bora Bora

Phuket

Phuket is the largest centre for diving activities in Thailand. There are a number of day trips available from Phuket which offer a wide variety of sites to dive. Shark Point and Anemone Reef, located 13 miles from the South of Phuket, is a designated marine sanctuary. Visibility is good to excellent and the area supports a wide range of marine life. Most notable are the inquisitive moray eels and zebra fish. Colourful soft and hard corals, sponges and sea fans can be seen as well as a profusion of fish.

Another popular site is Phi Phi Island, a silent world full of wonder, excitement and adventure. The crystal clear waters are teeming with a dazzling and enchanting marine life. There are many popular day trips available and the best time to dive is from November through to May. June through October the area is subject to strong winds and not conducive for diving.

Diving the Similan Islands is Phuket's best known dive location and accessible only by liveaboard dive boat. The Similan Island reefs team with fish life and divers are never disappointed.

MV ANDAMAN SEAFARER is a comfortable wood and steel liveaboard diving vessel. From Phuket, regular diving liveaboard dive cruises of 4, 5 or 6 diving days are scheduled on Sundays from November to April. The vessel accommodates up to 14 passengers and divers: 6 in three VIP A/C private cabins (two single berths) and 8 in two FIRST CLASS A/C cabins (four single berths). Haapai

The reefs and shallows of the Ha’apai Group offer amazing underwater scenery. Walls, caves, channels, tunnels, drifts, drop-offs and coral gardens (with hard and soft coral and hundreds of fish species) make for a great variety of dives. Outstanding visibility (25m to 30m in summer up to 70 m in winter) and very comfortable water temperatures (23°C to29°C) combine to create magnificent conditions for diving. Some of the best diving in Ha’apai is found around the island of 'Ofolanga. Huge sea caves and complex underwater cave systems, as well as truly incredible coral arch (one of a few in the South Pacific), all await experienced divers.

 SANDY BEACH RESORT
Located on Foa, an unspoiled island in the northern islands of Tonga's Ha'apai group where pods of dolphins and whales are regular visitors, Sandy Beach Resort is designed for nature lovers.  Each fale is open to the sea with a spacious verandah and has large tiled rooms cooled by ceiling fans, imported rattan furnishings with built-in wardrobes, refrigerator, coffee and tea making facilities and a choice of king-size or two single beds.  All fales are situated right on the tree lined beach where swimming and other watersports are possible at all tides. Magnificent reefs lie within swimming distance and the tariff includes use of snorkelling equipment and Polynesian outrigger canoes. Sandy Beach Resort won't have outboard motors, jet boats or anything that disturbs the environment or tranquility.

Nuku Alofa

 The Island of Tongatapu is the international gateway and your first point of entry into Tonga. The city features a surprising number of excellent restaurants with the Seaside, Lunarossa and Little Italy all winning restaurant awards. There is also a variety of accommodation in the city of Nuku’alofa; on the off shore islands of Atata, Fafa and Pangaimotu and the beachside resorts on the Western side of the island.  Highlights of the city include a visit to the Royal Palace which is located on the waterfront and has become a symbol of Tonga to the world and it is truly an unforgettable sight.

PACIFIC ROYALE HOTEL
You will feel right at home the moment you walk into the large, beautiful lobby of the Pacific Royale Hotel. For business travellers with dealings in Tonga, or tourists looking to explore Tongatapu from a base in Nuku'alofa, the Pacific Royale is an excellent choice. Is located on Tonga's main island "Tongatapu" in Nuku'alofa. The dive boat "Deep Blue I" starts the Dive safaris and Daytrips from Faua Jetty wharf here in Nuku'alofa.   For divers who want to stay on or around Tongatapu daily 2-tank dive trips including lunch and afternoon snack are offered. Divers who would like to go to Tonga's other Island groups, can join the Dive safaris. Tonga is known as one of the world's best dive spots. Sharks, grouper, turtles, drop-offs, caves and everything else a diver can expect, you will see here in the untouched Tongan waters. The diving centre is equipped with a complete and modern workshop for diving equipment.

INTERNATIONAL DATELINE HOTEL
The hotel is situated on the Waterfront Nuku'alofa City Center. Fafa Island Resort, an 18 acres palm covered atoll is located only 30 minutes by fast boat from Nuku ’alofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga on the main island. In keeping with the natural beauty of Tonga, all the Fales are in traditional construction, have private facilities, solar heated water and surrounded by woven coconut leaf walls! The mood is distinctly casual, and the accommodations are a toss away from the worlds largest swimming pool; the Pacific Ocean.

The island is surrounded by golden sandy beaches and the water crowned by a beautiful reef. Swimming is safe within the lagoon and the crystal waters are warm, calm and welcoming. Snorkelling gear is complementary to all guests as are paddle skies. Scuba diving and deep sea fishing can also be arranged. In addition, snorkelling and island trips are arranged. Of particular note is beautiful Malinoa Island; smaller than Fafa, uninhabited, with stunning coral the island is a sun-worshippers heaven.

A maximum of 26 guests stay in traditional Tongan style Fales all facing the beach. The Bungalows are built with natural materials: palm poles, wooden shingles, coconut thatch and palm timber floors. The Luxury and Superior Fales are just a few steps from the waters edge with unobstructed views of the ocean, each with its private beach and they are provided with maximum privacy as they are set far apart from each other. All Fales have a courtyard with semi open bathroom and the shower in a private flower garden. A covered veranda, spacious bedrooms with king size beds, dressing room, ceiling fan, hammock and beach beds. Some Luxury bungalows have an extra building containing the bathroom, a walk in wardrobe and extra room for 2 beds, plus a large partly covered veranda with comfortable deck chairs.

LAGOON LODGE

The Lagoon Lodge offers 15 self-catering and fully serviced accommodations with a choice of either standard apartments or suite apartments. The lodge is located on the peaceful shores of Fangakakau Lagoon and just five minutes drive to downtown Nuku'alofa. The apartments are spacious and serviced daily and offer broadband, cable television and air-conditioning. The atmosphere is serene and the staff are pleasant and friendly.

EAU ISLAND HIDEAWAY RESORT

The Hideaway is a 100% local operation, established in 2000, by Sefesi and his son Taki. The Hideaway is the only accommodation on 'Eua island Tonga the oceans edge, where you can hear the soothing sound of the waves lapping against the reef. This is a delightful spot to watch the whales frolic from their wonderful whale viewing platform located right on reef, or if you would like to view them from a boat they hold the only whale watching license on the island and can organize viewing in a small eight seater boat which makes for a very intimate encounter. The Hideaway also runs Trekking and hiking tours , 4wd tours, horse hire, bike hire and are now working with a local dive operation, with whom you can dive the underwater caves and reefs of 'Eua. The Hideaway has it's own restaurant and bar facilities, offering some great local Tongan food plus European food. For actives and a great time on 'Eua island, The Hideaway can't be beaten.

Vavau

The Vava'u Islands are situated 240 km north of Tongatapu. There are 64 islands with most of them high and densely forested. There are 31 of these islands that remain uninhabited.  Neiafu, the capital city of the Vava'u Group is a quaint seaside town that comes to life when its harbours fill with yachts and whales from July to October. During this time visitors can watch the mama whales playing with their new-born calves. A popular activity is whale watching and snorkelling with the whales. Visibility in the turquoise crystal clear waters of Vava’u generally extends 20-35 metres and the diving is magnificent. There is a wide range of dive sites offering virgin hard corals, soft corals, life size sea fan grottos, wall diving, cave diving and wreck diving.

THE TONGAN RESORT

The Tongan Beach Resort is in a great location, on a white sandy beach. The resort features 12 rooms perfect for honeymoon couples or small groups.   All rooms offer private toilets, hot-showers, fridges, electric fans, tea and coffee making facilities. All the rooms are light with bright furnishings and feature inspiring views of the golden sand beach and crystal clear, turquoise waters of Port of Refuge Harbour.  The beachfront location provides you with safe swimming at all tides, snorkelling, water skiing and sea kayaking. Activities such as whale watching and scuba diving can be arranged, and operators will pick up from the resort jetty.  The fully licensed restaurant specializes in local and European cuisine as well as local fish and other dishes fresh from the sea. Situated right on the beach Mystic Sands has it own pier for pickup to go diving,whale watching sailing or sports fishing. This owner operated resort offers the genuine warmth and relaxed style offered in motel style accommodation.  It is well located only 20 minuets drive from Vava'u airport and only 10 minuets drive from Neiafu centre. Although the resort itself has no restaurant or bar there is a restaurant a short 5 minute walk along the beach and a self contained option available. A new thatched Tongan fale is located nicely on the waterfront and provides a social area at the end of the day for guests to gather with friends or generally socialise. The resort is child friendly with a safe swimming beach on your doorstep and babysitting is also available.

MARCELLA RESORT

Set amidst a lush tropical garden about two kilometres from the centre of Neiafu, Marcella Resort offers nine bungalows with views over the Port of Refuge Harbour. Each room has a private balcony and an ensuite bathroom with a hot shower. Marcella Resort is also an ideal place for families. Restaurant and bar features local and international specialties and tennis is complimentary. Swimming is possible only a few steps from the resort. The resort arranges whale watching trips on its own vessell and its full day trips include a lunch break on the famous 'Treasure Island - Eua'iki. Iririki Island Resort
Located in Port Vila Harbour, this 69 acre private island was once home to the British Commissioner of the New Hebrides. This is one of Vanuatu’s best kept secrets. Tranquillity is a Dive Base and Resort with Outdoors and Eco Tourism activities including swimming, snorkeling, Scuba Diving and other land-based activities, or just relaxing on the idyllic beaches. Breaka's Beach Resort
Set on a sweeping 2 km long white sand beach. Fringed with coconut palms and beach Pandanus. Breaka’s is an intimate boutique resort for adults and young adults over 15 years old. Nautilus offers diver’s easy, uncrowded access to Port Vila’s wide range of idyllic dive sites with up to 30m visibility.  It is the longest running dive operation in Vanuatu, with the best equipment and dive boats and friendly staff all come together to provide you with a great diving holiday. Sailaway Cruises
Operates from Havannah Harbour, North Efate Island about a 40 minute scenic bus ride from town. This is a cruise that really lives up to all those visions, aboard the 42 ft long, 23 ft wide sailing trimaran "Golden Wing".  The northern side of the island is protected from South-easterly Trade winds which means the seas are usually calm and the water exceptionally clear for divers and snorkellers. Day cruises normally operate Sun, Tue, Thu, Fri and Sat and include transfers, 2 dives, lunch and weight belts. Espiritu Santo

 About an hour's flight from Port Vila is the more remote destination of Espiritu Santo. Usually shortened to Santo, it is home to the SS President Coolidge, the largest and most accessible shipwreck in the world. This 22,200 ton luxury passenger liner was a WW2 troop ship. She hit a mine and sank just offshore. Providing a multitude of dives to do on this vessel aimed at different experience levels. The Coolidge is also home for many corals and fish, schools of barracuda, Trevally, and sharks. Another famous site is Million Dollar Point where the US army disposed of its military equipment at the end of WW2. See tanks/bulldozers, cranes, fork lifts, trucks, etc, all on the ocean floor and encrusted in corals - a truly amazing sight. Tubana is another famous area with caves, swim throughs, crayfish, plenty of soft and hard corals and all with a visibility up around 50 meters (about 160 feet).You can also dive the USS Tucker, a US Destroyer and the MV Henry Bonneaud, a coastal trader.

Aquamarine Dive Centre

Since 1988 Aquamarine staff have developed a professional and personalized service for divers looking for something different in their holiday. Aquamarine has a small dive boat, three compressors, 70 tanks, 12 rental sets, a retail dive shop, and workshop. Aquamarine is a registered PADI, SSI and TDI Dive Centre and Resort Association Member, and a PADI Master Instructor is on staff. Due to the geography and close proximity of the surrounding islands most dive sites are protected from rough seas so dives are seldom cancelled. Most dive sites are 5-15 minutes away by boat, while the Coolidge is easily accessed from the shore.
A minimum of two (2) dives are scheduled each day and dives are customized to each divers experience level and interests. Over 20 different dive sites to choose from.
A free pickup and return is offered to all accommodations in Luganville. The dive shop is centrally located in the centre of town on the main street.
All year round diving is available and while November to April is considered cyclone season, some of the best diving conditions are found over this time. Visibility may vary from 10 - 60m; water temperature varies from 24 - 30 deg C. It is recommended that a minimum of a 3mm wetsuit be used.

Allan Power Dive Tours

Allan Power has over 30 years of experience and more than 100,000 dives on the SS President Coolidge. Their knowledge of the Coolidge is extensive and the dedicated team of professional, experienced dive guides lead you around the Coolidge, through areas such as the decks, cargo holds, supply areas, shops and offices.  Allan Powers knowledge of other local dive sites is excellent and they offer both shore and boat dives to many destinations.  Dives are done every morning and afternoon and spectacular night dives on the Coolidge are also available.
Allan Power has built up a sheltered gearing up area which allows the easiest and most convenient access to the Coolidge.  Allan also maintains a vibrant and active coral garden area to keep you entertained during the safety stops. You will often find Allan "doing the gardening" at his coral garden.

Bokissa Resort (Private Island)

Ratua Island is a wild, magical place with authentic people who offer a simple and warm reception in a naturally beautiful environment. The 146-acre island is also home to horses, ponies, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and chickens that roam free across the land.  Fifteen Indonesian-style villas are shared between 3 villages: Fish Village, West Point Village and South Point Village. There are a total of 18 resort style apartments each one modern, spacious and richly finished in local timbers and can accommodate couples, singles or families. Tanna

Only a 45 minute flight from Vanuatu's capital Port Vila, Tanna Island is the perfect location for travellers wanting to get a real feel for the culture and natural beauty of Vanuatu.

There is a lot to see and do in Tanna so, if you want to swim in underwater caves, snorkel on some of the best coral in the South Pacific, visit untouched waterfalls, see the islands wild horses and experience an ancient culture that remains largely unchanged to this day, allow time to explore.
 
Tanna is best known as the home to one of Vanuatu’s most popular tourist attractions, the Mount Yasur volcano.
 
Considered one of the world’s most accessible volcanos, Mt Yasur is just a one hour drive from Tanna’s White Grass Airport followed by a short 10 minute walk to the crater rim. It is best viewed at dusk so at least one night stay in Tanna is recommended. Most accommodation venues will organise a tour and there are tour operators running overnight and day tours from Port Vila.
 
Anthropologically, Tanna is fascinating with the local culture largely unaffected by the western way of life.  To experience the traditional Tannese culture there are day tours to local villages as well as custom ceremonies throughout the year like the renowned Nekowiar or Toko ceremony. There are also cult tribes to learn about including the Prince Philip cult and the John Frum’s cargo cult.
 
If you visit on a Friday you will be privy to the weekly ceremony when John Frum members conduct rituals including raising flags and marching in unison, holding the belief that mimicking these American acts will lead to the delivery of magical cargo such as radios, jeeps, fridges and other manufactured items owned by American visitors during WWII.
